Choosing a domain name
Choosing a domain name is like choosing what you want for breakfast – there are endless possibilities.....unless someone else gets in there first. If this does happen, don't despair – there are ways of getting around it.
Anyway, we are getting ahead of ourselves here. The first thing required when deciding a domain name is an idea and this idea needs to be related to your business but also needs to be short and to the point. Customers / visitors don't want to have to remember complicated names or have to type long words into the address bar.
Also try and pick a name that is easy to spell, for example don't go and register a domain name with Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious in it. You need to make it as easy as possible for your audience to find you.
Once you have chosen your fantastically amazing name that no-one in the world has already thought of, you need to think about which extensions you would like attached to it. You may want to register the .co.uk domain but it is really best practice to try and register most of the popular extensions. If you register the .co.uk, the .com and .net extensions of your name then you can further protect your brand and prevent cyber squatters from buying varying extensions that you haven't registered.
If as mentioned earlier, your chosen name has already been registered, it may be worth using a thesaurus and trying to determine different names that mean the same thing. It can be frustrating when you seem to keep choosing names that have already been taken but at least once you have your name, it will be truly unique.
To further reiterate your brand, once you have chosen your name you may want to also register domains that are a misspelling of your name or the pluralised version. For example - you might choose the name 'tentpegmania'. If this is the case, you may also consider registering 'tentpegsmania' (plural). It's just a way of catching extra traffic but also stops competitors or cyber squatters from deliberately registering similar names to your own.
In the same vein you should also consider registering different grammatical forms of your domain name and synonyms.
